CASE STUDY: Building Knowledge and Capacity for Affordable Housing in Small Communities

This study was done by A. Wilson from the Laichwiltach Family Life Society for BC Housing and the city of Campbell River. This study was taken from information gathered from workshops that were held across BC to get a better understanding for addressing affordable housing from these communities. The project objective was to figure out the challenges and leading practices in building affordable housing, a forum for learning about leading practices, tools, and strategies for building affordable housing.

When the residents were asked what most they felt their community needed to be able to provide more affordable housing their answers were more land to build these homes, more diversity in housing options and increased housing supply for Indigenous people including larger families and youth. They also discussed how these affordable housing could come to be, and the funding would have to come from third party sources like BC Housing, non-profit organizations, local governments, first nation governments, federal government, and private sectors.

The main three issues that are addressed from this workshop was more affordable housing for larger families, hold the regional district of Strathcona accountable and to prioritize affordable housing. The third priority is adjusting the rules of housing to allow more diversity like revising bylaws. Based on this information, we will implement a variety of housing options for multi sized families and disperse the homes so that they are not concentrated in one area.
